How To Prep The Rice
Rinse the rice under cold water and then drain it well. There is no need to soak the rice. I prefer rinsing rice in a wire mesh strainer so it’s easy to drain out the water completely.
Two Easy Ways to Cook Jasmine Rice in the Instant Pot
In this post, I’ll show you two simple methods: the Pot-in-Pot method, ideal for cooking 1 to 1.5 cups of rice or when pairing with another dish, and the Main Pot method, perfect for cooking larger batches directly in the insert. Both deliver great results—I’ll walk you through when and how to use each.
Pot-in-Pot Method: Perfect for smaller quantities or when you're cooking rice alongside a main dish like chicken korma or spinach dal. In this method, rinsed rice and water go into a separate bowl, which is placed on a trivet inside the Instant Pot. You can either place it over water or stack it above another dish cooking below.
Use a 1 to 1 rice-to-water ratio. Pressure cook on high for 4 minutes, followed by a 5-minute natural pressure release. If paired with another dish, match the rice cook time to that dish (for example, 8 minutes for chicken curry, 5 minutes for spinach dal).
Main Pot Method: Best for cooking more than 1.5 cups of rice. Add rinsed jasmine rice directly to the Instant Pot insert with water (1 to 1 ratio) and salt if desired. Pressure cook on high for 4 minutes and quick release the pressure.
If you're cooking a smaller amount of rice using the Main Pot method, be sure to remove the inner pot as soon as cooking is done. Letting it sit on the "Keep Warm" setting too long can cause the rice to overcook, dry out, or stick to the bottom.
1-Minute Jasmine Rice Method
This is my latest go-to method—and it's a game changer! It’s especially convenient because there’s no need to worry about timing a quick release.
Simply add rinsed rice and water to the main pot (1 to 1 ratio), pressure cook on high for 1 minute, and allow natural pressure release. In most cases, the pressure will release on its own in about 10 minutes. If not, go ahead and release any remaining pressure after 10 minutes.

My Go-To Jasmine Rice Brands

These are all great options and widely available in Asian or international grocery stores.

Recipe Video
Ingredients
- 1½ cups Jasmine rice rinsed and drained
- 1½ cups water
- 1½ teaspoon kosher salt optional
Instructions
Pot in Pot Method
- Add 1 cup of water to the Instant Pot insert.
- Add rice, water, and salt to a stainless steel bowl. Place the rice bowl over the trivet and place the trivet in the Instant Pot.
- Pressure cook for 4 minutes, followed by a 5 minutes natural pressure release. Release the remaining pressure manually and then open the Instant Pot.
Main Pot Method
- This method works best when you have more than 1.5 cups of jasmine rice.
- Add rice, water and salt into the Instant Pot insert.
- Pressure cook on Hi pressure mode for 4 minutes followed by quick release.
Notes
- Prevent overcooking – Once done, transfer the inner pot to a trivet to stop further cooking and avoid mushy rice.
- Rice looks undercooked? – Close the lid and let it sit for 5 minutes. Residual heat will finish cooking it.
- Do not stir while hot – Let the rice cool slightly, then gently fluff with a silicone spatula to keep the grains intact.
- To serve – Gently loosen the rice along the sides with a soft spatula and serve.
- Making ahead for a party? – Spread the rice on a tray to cool. Use slightly wet hands to separate sticky grains. Reheat in the microwave, oven, or chafing dish when ready to serve.
